Complete May 31 California Women's Tennis Release in PDF Format
Four members of the California women's tennis team were named to the 2008 ITA Division I Women's Tennis All-America team this week including five-time selection, senior Susie Babos. Babos was honored for her achievements as a doubles player for the third time, receiving singles honors in addition in the previous two years. Joining the three-time singles champion is fellow senior Stephanie Kusano for doubles; and junior Claire Ilcinkas and freshman Marina Cossou, each for singles.
The four different recognized players represent the most players Cal has had on the All-America team since 2000 when Amy Jensen, Anita Kurimay, Karoline Borgersen and Claire Curran all made the team. Jensen and Kurimay each received selections as both singles and doubles players, giving the Golden Bears six overall selections in one year, the most in school history. With four selections this season, Cal has had at least four over the last three seasons and now has had 76 selections overall.
In order to qualify for selection to the ITA All-America team, a singles player must match at least one of the following criteria: be one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA Singles Championship; reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship; or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA Singles Rankings. In order to qualify for a doubles selection, a player must be part of a team that is either a top eight seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship, reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship or finish in the top 10 as a team in the final ITA Doubles Rankings.
Babos completed her career as one of Cal's winningest singles and doubles players in school history and holds the Bears' only NCAA Singles title. She added two All-American Championships titles during her time at Cal and was half of the 2007 Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year with Zsuzsanna Fodor. Kusano earns her first All-America nod after teaming with Babos to log a 24-16 record on Cal's top doubles court. The two completed the year by advancing to the NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16; and hold the No. 10 ranking in the final ITA rankings.
Ilcinkas led all Bears with 35 singles win as a junior and put up the best winning percentage of any player from Cal, with only nine losses. Ilcinkas advanced to the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Singles Championship Semifinal and to the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 16 and completes the year with the No. 29 singles ranking.
Cossou put up 32 wins against only 10 losses in her first year at Cal and is receiving her first ITA All-America selection after holding the fifth seed in the NCAA Singles Championship. Cossou went 19-6 in dual play, contributing her efforts primarily from the second singles court and holds the No. 9 rankling in the 2008 ITA Division I Women's Tennis singles rankings.
The Bears completed the year with a 21-6 overall record, 6-2 in Pac-10 Conference matches. Cal advanced to the championship match at the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships before falling to UCLA in Tulsa, Okla. The Bears received the No. 3 ranking in the final 2008 ITA Division I Women's Tennis team rankings, the highest ranking in team history.
The ITA National Players of the Year and ITA National Doubles Teams of the Year will be announced next week. The ITA All-America Teams for all divisions are currently available on the ITA website at www.itatennis.com
