BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team (22-5, 7-1 Pac-10) received the No. 4 ranking in the final Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) College Tennis Rankings. The Golden Bears finished as the NCAA runner-up for the second consecutive season after falling to No. 3 Duke in the national championship match. Cal started the season with the No. 2 ranking and never dropped out of the top 10 as the Bears took home a second-place conference finish.
The top-four finish is the eighth all-time for the Bears. Cal has received a final ranking of No. 5 or better on 14 occasions and has now done so for three-consecutive years. The Bears finished third a year ago, the best final ranking in school history. Cal's No. 7-ranked doubles team of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova are currently competing in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championship round of 16 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
