BERKELEY - Claire Ilcinkas became the first Bear to break the 30 singles-wins plateau this season in helping the Golden Bears secure two 4-0 wins over the weekend in the first and second rounds of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Her team moves on to the Round of 16 and the junior from Paris, France, is the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cal defeated Army and LSU at the Hellman Tennis Complex as Ilcinkas won all four of her matches, two in singles and two in doubles. She got her 30th and 31st singles wins in convincing fashion on the fourth court against Army's Kristin Beehler (6-0, 6-0) and LSU's Nicole Kantor (6-3, 6-1). In doubles play, with the help of partner Marina Cossou, Ilcinkas was never threatened, taking two 8-0 wins on the second court.
Ilcinkas' 31-7 overall singles record is the best winning percentage on the team in addition to being the most for any player. She is currently ranked No. 40 in the latest ITA poll.
