BERKELEY - No. 26-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou helped send the Golden Bears to the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship round of 16 with a pair of dominating singles wins and the first doubles win of the weekend, making her the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week. Cal wiped out Long Island with a 4-0 victory on Friday before dropping No. 31-ranked Texas, 4-1, in the second round. Cossou teamed up with senior Claire Ilcinkas (ranked No. 35 together) and got the weekend's first win with an 8-1 pounding of Ashley Harvey and Amy Hosotsuji of the Blackbirds. In singles play, Cossou helped the Bears get one of the three victories they needed with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Harvey at No. 2 singles. Against Texas, Cossou recorded her 25th singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Caroline Larsson at court two. The second-year Bear has won eight of her nine singles matches since returning from a leg injury. During the weekend, Cossou learned that she will be participating in the NCAA doubles championship with Ilcinkas as one of two Cal duos. She is also one of 64 singles players in the NCAA singles tournament and has recently received her second selection to the Pac-10's all-conference team.
