BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team will bring its new No. 7 ranking to the Weinman Foundation Invitational this week. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its team, singles and doubles ranking on Jan. 3, with four Golden Bears garnering singles recognition and two Cal teams earning doubles rankings from the ITA. The Bears will open 2013 with their new rankings when they compete in Honolulu from Saturday, Jan. 12, through Monday, Jan. 14. The field includes host Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific, and action begins at 11 a.m. Hawaii Time on Saturday and Sunday and on 2 p.m. Hawaii Time on Monday. In the ITA singles poll, Cal sophomore Zsofi Susanyi - who reached the 2012 NCAA singles semifinals - is ranked No. 7, junior Anett Schutting is No. 9, freshman Lynn Chi holds the No. 109 spot and senior Annie Goransson is ranked No. 110. In doubles, the pair of Schutting and Goransson is ranked No. 32, while junior Alice Duranteau and sophomore Laura Posylkin are ranked No. 59. Cal is one of 16 schools with both its men's and women's teams ranked in the latest ITA polls, as the Cal men are ranked No. 14. The Cal women ended the 2011-12 season with a No. 7 team ranking in the final ITA poll, after falling in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Bears carried their momentum from last season into the fall. Highlights included Schutting reaching the final and Susanyi reaching the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November; Schutting playing in the singles final and seniors Goransson and Tayler Davis reaching the doubles final of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in late October; and the Bears winning four titles at the Saint Mary's Invitational in mid-October.
