PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Tayler Davis lost to Duke's Mary Clayton, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6), in the second round of the singles qualifying consolation draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Davis won her first match in the back draw yesterday - beating Penn's Augustina Eskenazi, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 - and came out strong today. But Clayton - who was on the Duke team that defeated Cal in the semifinals of last season's ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships - held on for the victory. "She played a back and forth match," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus. "The girl from Duke has a really good record and has won a lot of matches for them. It could've gone either way. "There are a few things we're going to work on to get her in better form. She's hitting the ball pretty well. It's a good start for her to get matches, because she didn't get a lot during the summer. This will give her a good starting point. She learned a lot from her matches here." That ends Davis' run in the tournament, though three Golden Bears are still alive in the ITA event: Sophomore Zsofi Susanyi and junior Anett Schutting start singles play in the main draw on Thursday, while Goransson pairs with Schutting in the doubles main draw. Schutting plays Michigan's sixth-seeded Emina Bektas at 10:45 a.m. and Susanyi, the second seed, takes on Texas A&M's Cristina Stancu at 12:30 p.m. The third-seeded duo of Goransson-Schutting earned a first-round bye and will play on Thursday against the winner of Thursday's first-round match between Ema Burgic-Jordaan Sanford (Baylor) and Beatrice Capra-Hanna Mar (Duke).
