STANFORD, Calif. - Suzi Babos, of the California women's tennis team, downed her opponent Thursday morning at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships singles round of 32, to advance to the round of 16. Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor teamed together in the first round of doubles to advance to the round of 16. Babos, who currently holds a No. 27 national singles ranking, upset 20th-ranked Robin Stephenson of Alabama in the three sets. Stephenson won the first set 6-4, but Babos fought back to take the next two, 6-2, 6-3. Babos will face sixth-ranked Zuzana Zemenova tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (PDT) in the round of 16. Babos, a sophomore from Sopron, Hungary, is the first Cal player to advance past the second round since 2004, when Raquel Kops-Jones competed in the quarterfinals. Last year, Babos fell in the second round to Stanford's Theresa Logar, 6-1, 6-3. Doubles action kicked off today, as Babos and Fodor defeated No. 20 Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth University, 6-4, 6-0. Cal's duo currently boasts a No. 8 national doubles ranking. Babos and Fodor will face Northwestern's Cristelle Grier and Alexis Prousis tomorrow in the round of 16.
