OJAI, Calif. - When the dust had settled, No. 96-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Anett Schutting had advanced to the singles semifinals of the 2012 Pac-12 Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Friday, April 27. The Golden Bears also had two pairs advance to the quarterfinals of the championship doubles draw.
Before Schutting broke through to the semifinals, she was one of three Cal players in the quarterfinal round. In the round of 16, fifth-seeded No. 14-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi defeated No. 79 Natasha Marks of Arizona, 6-0, 6-1, to move on, but was later eliminated by third-seeded No. 5 Mallory Burdette of Stanford in the quarters, 7-6, 6-2, with a 7-4 first-set tiebreaker score.
No. 83-ranked junior Annie Goransson posted her 15th straight win when she ousted eighth-seeded No. 28-ranked Sabrina Santamaria of USC, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 16. Her streak was snapped however, when top-seeded No. 3-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford tripped Goransson in a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Gibbs used a 6-0, 6-0 win against No. 55-ranked junior Tayler Davis to advance out of the round of 16.
In a rematch of last year's NCAA singles title match, 57th-ranked Stacey Tan got her revenge when she knocked off fourth-seeded No. 7-ranked senior Jana Juricova in three sets. Juricova won her first set, 6-2, but Tan fought back to get a 6-4 win in the second and staved off elimination with a 7-5 win in the third set.
Schutting got her 31st and 32nd wins of the year when she upset seventh-seeded No. 17-ranked Danielle Lao of USC, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 16. Up against the second seed in the tournament, Schutting stayed the course against fourth-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA to nab a 6-0 win in the second set after she dropped her first set, 6-4. Anderson eventually retired after the second set to allow Schutting to advance to the semis.
In the doubles championship round of 16, Goransson and Schutting teamed to claim an 8-3 win against UCLA's team of McCall Jones and Carling Seguso. The second-seeded and fifth-ranked Cal duo registered its 13th straight win dating back to March 3.
The Bears' 18th-ranked team of Juricova and Susanyi also posted an 8-3 score to move into the doubles quarterfinals as the Cal tandem beat Callie Craig and Anastasia Putilina of Utah.
In the doubles invitational draw, Davis teamed with freshman Laura Posylkin for an 8-3 win against Arizona's team of Susan McRann and Kim Stubbe. Sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander fell in the first round, 8-6, to Utah's team of Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith. In the singles invitational round of 16, Duranteau was defeated by Arizona's Sarah Landsman, 6-0, 6-2, in a rematch of last year's invitational singles final.
Play will move to Libbey Park for the final two days and continues with invitational doubles at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, April 28. The championship doubles draw will take the courts at 9 a.m. for quarterfinal matches. Championship singles semifinals matches begin not before 10:30 a.m. PT.
