OJAI, Calif. - Two doubles teams will play in finals as the California women's tennis team concludes play at the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club in Ojai, Calif. on Sunday. The team of freshman Marina Cossou and junior Claire Ilcinkas edged out Jessica Leitch and Wendy Pilecka of Arizona State in one semifinal today to earn a spot in the final against the second-seeded USC duo of Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu. Cossou and Ilcinkas needed the tiebreaker to beat their Sun Devil counterparts, winning by a 7-5 score in the breaker. Cal and USC will square off for the Pac-10 Women's Doubles Championship in a 12:30 p.m. match tomorrow.
Fink and Niculescu defeated the Golden Bears' top doubles team of seniors Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano in the other semifinal by an 8-4 score to earn the other spot in the final match. Babos and Kusano won their 21st match together at the championships, getting two wins yesterday.
In the Women's Invitational Doubles, the Cal duo of freshman Rachael Dillon and senior Daron Moore got an 8-6 win over Cekic and Stefanova of Washington State in their semifinal match to earn a spot in tomorrow's final against fourth-seeded McGoodwin and Remynse of UCLA. Dillon and Moore will begin their match at 11 a.m.
After the Pac-10 Championships, the Bears will await NCAA Tournament selection announcements. Announcements will air between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, Tuesday, April 29, on ESPNews. Please check CalBears.com for updates and information.
