The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team narrowly edged No. 8 Arizona State,
5-4, on Saturday, April 11, at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe to claim a dual match sweep of the Wildcats this year. The win improved Cal's record to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the Pac-10 while Arizona State fell to 12-6 overall and 4-5 in Pac-10 play.
The team score was knotted at 4-4 with just the No. 1 doubles match remaining. The nation's 12th-ranked duo of Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen notched an 8-6 win over No. 10 Stephanie Lansdorp and Katy Propstra to clinch the team victory for the Bears.
The Bears claimed three singles victories, two in three sets. At No. 3, Jensen knocked off Lansdorp, 6-4, 7-6(4). At No. 5 singles, Claire Curran continued her march of dominance since returning from an elbow injury with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Kerry Giardino. Curran has not lost a singles match since her return to the team on March 23.
Stephanie Tibbits outlasted Celena McCoury, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Cal closes out its regular season this weekend with a two-match homestand against UCLA and USC. The Bears host the Bruins on Friday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m. and the Trojans on Saturday, April 18 at 12 Noon. Both matches will be contested at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus.
