Women's Tennis Leads USC in Rainout

April 3, 1998

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked California women's tennis team won four singles matches against No. 18 USC to lead, 4-1, before rain began to fall at Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles today. The dual contest has tentatively been rescheduled for April 22 at USC.

Cal's Amanda Augustus, Amy Jensen and Stephanie Tibbits recorded victories in straight sets at the Nos. 1,3 and 6 positions, while at No. 4, Anita Kurimay battled with USC's Kara Warkentin before prevailing in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. The sole Bear loss came at No. 5 where Trojan Karolina Bakalarova proved to be too much for Francesca La'O, downing her in straight sets.

Jacqui Boyd and Esther Knox were unable to complete their match at No. 2. USC's Boyd leads 5-1 in the third set with the game score set at deuce. Knox will try to fight back from the brink of defeat when the two teams resume the dual match next month.

The Bears will play against No. 14 UCLA tomorrow at the Los Angles Tennis Center. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
