Bears easily handle Harvard, 8-1

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team notched an 8-1 win over No. 25 Harvard today at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Bears finished their latest homestand, 5-1, and improved their season record to 13-2 while the Crimson fell to 7-4.

At No. 1 singles, 20th-ranked Amanda Agustus recorded her 20th win of the year with a 6-3, 6-0 pounding of 30th-ranked Ivy Wang. Just midway thorough the schedule, Agustus has already surpassed her win total of 19 from last season.

Today's match marked the return of Claire Curran who had been out since November with an elbow injury. She won at No. 6 singles against Julia Kim, 6-3,6-4.

The sole loss for the Bears came at No. 3 singles where Amy Jensen fell victim to Harvard's Rosemary She, 7-5, 6-1. It was just the second dual match loss for Jensen in thirteen contests.

Cal swept the doubles matches to cap a successful day. The Bears have won 37 of their 40 dual match doubles matches this season.

The Bears travel to Texas next week for matches against the Texas Longhorns on March 24 at 2:00 p.m. and the Georgia Bulldogs on March 25 at 11:00 a.m. They will not play at home again until April 17 when UCLA comes into town.
