SAN DIEGO - Fifteenth-ranked California won its third straight dual match when the Golden Bears defeated No. 52 San Diego State, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. Cal improved its record to 8-4, while the Aztecs fell to 7-4. The Bears two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. The 40th-ranked team of freshman Lynn Chi and junior Anett Schutting knocked off SDSU's Laura Antonana Iriarte and Michela Casanova, 8-2, on court one to start the day. But Cal freshman Klara Fabikova and junior Kelly Chui fell to the Aztecs' Julia Wais/Kristin Buth, 8-5, on court two to tie the proceedings. The senior duo of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson won the doubles point by beating Isabelle Hoorn/Alicia Aguilar, 8-6, on court three. In singles on court six, Goransson shut out Casanova, 6-0, 6-0, to give Cal a 2-0 lead. SDSU got on the board when Chui lost to Tami Nguyen on court five, 6-4, 6-1, to make the score 2-1. But that was the last win for the Aztecs, as Cal swept the final four matches. On court two, No. 108 Fabikova topped Aguilar, 6-2, 6-4; No. 57 Chi beat Antonana Iriarte, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, on court three; Davis beat Buth, 7-6(4), 6-1, on court four; and No. 9 Schutting closed out the match by ousting Wais, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, on court one. Cal returns to Pac-12 play when it hosts Colorado on Friday, March 22, and Utah on Saturday, March 23, at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
