BERKELEY, Calif - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team overcame a determined effort by No. 29 Fresno State to defeat the Bulldogs 8-0 at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Cal campus Friday afternoon. The victory improved the Bears to 7-1, while Fresno State fell to 4-5 with the loss.
Amanda Augustus rebounded from a rare loss at the National Indoors last week to defeat Fresno State's Dora Djilianova 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match and improve her 1998 season record to 16-4. Amy Jensen played at No. 4 for the first time this season and easily handled Laura Townsend 6-0, 6-3. She is undefeated in dual match play this year.
Fresno State put up a battle at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, forcing Anita Kurimay and Francesca La'O to three sets before the Bears came through. Kurimay found her stroke consistency which was lacking in the first set to in the first set to pull out a 4-6,6-1,6-3 victory. La'O also dropped her first set, but buckled down to win 5-7,6-3,6-0.
The Bears went on to sweep through doubles play, winning all three matches, to provide the final margin of victory, 8-0.
The California women's tennis team continue their homestand tomorrow, Feb. 28 against their cross-town rival, fifth-ranked Stanford in a dual match at the Hellman Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 12 noon.
