MADISON, Wis.-- The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team won its seventh consecutive dual match with an easy 7-1 victory over 17th-ranked South Alabama at the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon. With the victory, Cal is now 7-0 and off to its best start since the Bears opened the 1987 season with a nine-game winning streak.
Cal faced little resistance during the match as each of Cal's seven victories came in straight sets.
Amanda Augustus got things rolling for the Bears winning at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over USA's Lenka Jakubekova. With the victory, Augustus has now won 11 of her last 12 singles matches, improving her overall record to 14-3 on the year.
Stephanie Tibbits also came up big for Cal , posting her ninth straight victory with a 6-4, 6-1 dismantling of Vanda Novakova at No. 3 singles.
The Bears also swept the doubles matches as the teams of Augustus/Amy Jensen and Francesca La'O/Jenny Lee both cruised to 8-1 victories.
The California women's tennis team will try to keep its winning streak alive when they face No. 16 Vanderbilt which upset No. 15 Notre Dame, 5-4, today. The match, which will be contested at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, is scheduled to begin at 2:30 CST.
