BERKELEY - The Golden Bears had more of a test in singles against No. 42 Saint Mary's on Saturday at the Cal Winter Invitational, yet the seventh-ranked California still won seven of eight singles matches against the Gaels and swept its doubles matches on the second day of the annual tournament held at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
On Friday, Cal swept its six singles matches against No. 60 Fresno State.
Saturday highlights included Cal senior Tayler Davis blanking the Gaels' Catherine Leduc, 6-0, 6-0, and the Bear pair of junior Kelly Chui and sophomore Cecilia Estlander winning in commanding fashion over Fresno State's Melissa McQueen/Rana Sherif, 8-1.
Sophomore Zsofi Susanyi won a relatively easy first set against the Catherine Isip, 6-1, but the Gael pushed the seventh-ranked Bear in the second before Susanyi prevailed, 7-6(1). Ninth-ranked junior Anett Schutting suffered the lone Cal loss of the day, as she fell to No. 64 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 6-4. That marked the only match and the only sets that the Bears have lost so far in this year's Cal Winter Invitational.
"Today was definitely harder than yesterday, especially because Saint Mary's has a really good spirit," Susanyi said. "They're a team that always comes out fast. They support each other on and off the court, no matter who's playing and who's not. We can definitely hear them also, so it was a challenge for us to be more focused on the court and not let that break us down."
Also in singles at Hellman, 109th-ranked freshman Lynn Chi beat the Gaels' Danielle Flores, 6-2, 6-3; freshman Klara Fabikova defeated Audrey Leitz, 6-1, 6-3; and junior Kelly Chui knocked off Hannah Liljekvist, 6-4, 6-2. At the Channing courts, sophomores Cessi Estlander and Laura Posylkin both won, with Estlander posting a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Liz Searl and Posylkin notching a quick 6-0, 6-1, win over Melissa Arthur.
In doubles at Hellman, Susanyi/Fabikova topped Fresno State's Bianca Modoc/Sophie Watts on court one, 8-4, while Schutting/Chi beat the Bulldogs' Aishwarya Agrawal/Anne Susdorf, 8-2, on court two. At Channing, the 59th-ranked duo of Posylkin and junior Alice Duranteau defeated the Broncos' Carolina O'Haren/Charlotte Newell, 8-2.
"Both Zsofi and Anett got pushed a little more today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "But I was happy with what I saw. Everyone did a good job today. And we have just amazing weather, so it's good to just get them out on the courts playing matches at this time of year. The more matches the better. In the bigger picture, we've got some stuff to work on in practice next week, definitely."
Next week Cal will host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which includes two of the same teams - Saint Mary's and Fresno State - competing at the Cal Winter Invitational.
"This is nice preparation for the matches coming up," Fabikova said. "It's nice to get an idea of the other teams, but every match is different. We'll know a little bit what to expect for next week, but we have to approach every match the same and just give it our all."
The final day of the Cal Winter Invitational takes place on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
