2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships/World Championship Trials Results | 2009 World University Games Results | USA Swimming Athlete Selection Procedures for the 2009 FINA World Championships
INDIANAPOLIS - Former California star Dana Vollmer won the 100-meter freestyle on the last day of the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium on Saturday to earn another berth in the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome. Vollmer raced to a time of 54.00 to edge Amanda Weir by three hundredths of a second (54.03). The Granbury, Texas, product also qualified to compete in the 200-meter freestyle and in the 100-meter butterfly in Rome after winning the 200 free and taking second in the 100 fly earlier in the meet. The national championships ended on Saturday, July 11. July 10 The World University Games end on Saturday, July 11. July 9 This is the second gold medal of the World University Games for Wilson, who won the 100-meter freestyle on July 7.
July 8 The Granbury, Texas, product had also posted the fastest preliminary time in the 200 free, with a 1:56.88. The 2009 FINA World Championships will take place in Rome, Italy, from July 26 to Aug. 2.
Earlier in the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships/World Championship Trials and 2009 World University Games While only those who win the A finals along with the top four finishers in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle A finals automatically qualify for the U.S. World Championships team, the final U.S. team should include most of the second-place finishers, including Vollmer. Tennessee product Christine Magnuson won the 100 fly and automatically qualified for the U.S. World Championships team in a course-record time of 57.15. In other swimming news, on July 7 in the World University Games held in Belgrade, Serbia, Cal junior Hannah Wilson won the 100-meter freestyle final in a World University Games and Hong Kong-record time of 54.35. Former Cal teammate Madison Kennedy tied for the bronze in the 100 free in a time of 54.96. Kennedy had won a gold medal as part of the winning U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay on July 5. The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships/World Championship Trials and the swimming portion of the 2009 World University Games both end on July 11.
