HONOLULU - The California women's swimming team is writing a blog about its current training in Hawaii, which began on Jan. 6 and ends on Jan. 14. The trip includes ocean and pool training along with an unofficial meet against the Hawaii Swimming Club. Lauren Boyle, a senior freestyler from Auckland, New Zealand, penned the first entry.
Day 1 - Jan. 6
The Bears departed Berkeley at an early 6:30 a.m., eagerly anticipating their journey to Hawaii.
Everything went smoothly at Oakland Airport. We landed five hours later in Honolulu and were welcomed with superb weather. Eighty-two degrees definitely feels better than the 49 we left behind in the Bay!
Once we arrived at our apartment building it was straight down to Waikiki Beach to tan and play in the waves. The beach is an approximate three-minute walk. Historically Wednesday has been the sacred day of rest at Cal. This week we used Wednesday to travel and get acquainted with our surroundings in Waikiki. Some other Bears, more inclined to shop, headed to Costco. We purchased grotesque amounts of food for the soon to be starving Cal swimmers.
The day ended with free time and a meal with friends of choice along the Waikiki strip. The sunset this evening was particularly beautiful.
