PROVO, Utah - Camille Cheng, Yvette Kong, Elizabeth Pelton and Kelly Naze won two individual events each as defending NCAA champion California topped host BYU, 158-118, in the Golden Bears' dual-meet opener on Friday at the Richards Building Pool. Cal won 14 of 16 events.
Cal head coach Teri McKeever was pleased with the performance by her team, which arrived in Provo this morning.
"There was some good racing today," she said. "It was a very long day, but the team raced tough, and it was good to compete against a new team. We had good energy, too."
The Bears won every swimming event, though Cal won the very first event of the day - the 200-yard medley relay - by just one hundredth of a second. The quartet of sophomore Melanie Klaren, Kong, Pelton and sophomore Kaylin Bing edged the Cougars, 1:44.78-1:44.79.
A sophomore, Cheng captured both the 100- (51.43) and 200-yard (1:51.76) freestyles, and Kong, another sophomore, won the 100 (1:03.91) and 200 (2:20.51) breaststrokes. Pelton won the 1000 freestyle (10:24.38) and 200 backstroke (1:56.89) and fellow freshman Naze won the 100 butterfly (55.98) and 200 individual medley (2:04.39).
Cheng also swam the third leg of the winning 400-free relay, the last event of the day that included Bing, Klaren and sophomore Catherine Breed. The Bears clocked a time of 3:28.29 to beat BYU's top relay (3:34.15) by almost six seconds.
Cal senior and U.S. Olympian Caitlin Leverenz won the 200 butterfly by more than three seconds over BYU's Kim Doroghian, 2:02.39-2:05.93. The defending NCAA champ in both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, Leverenz did not swim in either event.
Junior Cindy Tran, the defending NCAA champ in the 100 backstroke, won her signature event in a time of 56.52, Bing captured the 50 free in a time of 23.90 and Breed clocked a winning time of 5:01.16 to win the 500 free.
In diving, freshman Annie Kastler posted Cal's top finish on the one-meter springboard with a score of 275.10 to take third. BYU's Dayna Christensen won the event (291.68) and also took the three-meter springboard (316.65). Junior Kahley Rowell collected Cal's top finish at three meters (265.28).
On Saturday, Cal remains in the Beehive state to take on Utah in Salt Lake City on at 11 a.m. PT/noon MT.
