BERKELEY - The No. 6/5 California softball team (23-3) will open Pac-12 play by hosting Utah at home. The weekend series begins Friday at 3 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field and continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
Cal was already scheduled for one game this week, against Northern Colorado on Wednesday, but the game was cancelled due to rain. This will be the first time the Golden Bears return to the diamond since having their 22-game win streak snapped by Syracuse, 8-1, last Saturday at the Chevron Spring Fling in Honolulu. 12 p.m. - No. 6/5 Cal vs. Utah // Levine-Fricke Field (Berkeley) Coverage: GameTracker, Twitter SCOUTING REPORT: UTAH (13-10-1) Utah joined California at the Chevron Spring Fling last weekend, where the Utes went 0-4 during their trip in the tropics. Like the Golden Bears, the Utes had a 12-game win streak snapped by Syracuse then fell to Baylor, Hawaii and Syracuse again. Senior Kelsi Hoopiiaina leads the Utes in batting average (3.97), hits (31), doubles (8), home runs (4), total bases (55) and slugging percentage (.705). Freshman Shelby Pacheco and sophomore Marissa Mendenhall are also threats with 14 and 13 RBI, respectively. The Utes have combined for 33 doubles this season. Last season, the Golden Bears swept their first-ever Pac-12 series against Utah in Salt Lake City.
