ATHENS, Ga. - After the No. 11-seeded California softball team lost to Georgia, 7-0, on Friday afternoon, Cal head coach Diane Ninemire and various student-athletes were available to chat with the local media.
California head coach Diane Ninemire
"Today was a great day for Georgia. They are a great hitting team, and we knew that coming into the game. We were not as aggressive at the plate or as sharp defensively as we needed to be."
On the lopsided loss:
"Our challenge has been consistency. There have been lopsided games both ways throughout this year. We have gotten up by imbalanced scores and we have been on the losing side in some of those games."
On Georgia's offense:
"Georgia is known for its great hitting. They were better at the plate than us today. You have to make adjustment according to the flow of the game. We are going to make those changes coming into tomorrow's game."
California pitcher Valerie Arioto
On her pitching performance:
"Their hitters did a great job of adjusting to my pitches. I didn't do what I needed to keep my team in the game. We needed to do a few more things to keep their hitters off balance. They are aggressive hitters. It would be tough to beat them even if I had my best stuff. Of course, I need to keep the ball in the ball park and keep my pitches down."
On playing on the road:
"We love traveling, especially in the postseason. We love coming out here to Georgia and being on the road. We just need to come back here tomorrow with a better mind set."
California catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt
On Georgia pitcher Sarah McCloud:
On Cal's baserunning:
"Any runner on base is an opportunity to score a run. At times, I think we were pushing a bit too hard, trying to push a run across and get ourselves on the board."
"Her change up was a very different speed from her curveball. She did a good job of throwing off-speed pitches and keeping us guessing and off-balance. She mixed it up by throwing inside and outside and that limited our offense."
Georgia Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
"I'm super proud of the team for going out there and battling. We took it one pitch at a time and really came together and played well as a team. Cal is a great team, and I'm sure that they'll come out fighting tomorrow."
On the Bulldogs game plan for Saturday:
"We just need to keep playing as a team and fighting together as a team. It's important to keep taking the tournament one game at a time and living in the here-and-now. You play the game as it happens and keep working to stay on top."
On Georgia's response to Cal's pitching:
"I'm proud of the way our team hit today and hopefully we can continue doing that tomorrow. Their pitchers are great, but I'm really proud of our hitters and the way they fought today. It's all a matter of battling and finding a good pitch to hit. "
Georgia third baseman Alisa Goler
On the team's complete performance today:
"We've had a lot of great games this year, but this win is up there with our best. We just need to keep taking advantage of the situations that are given to us and keep fighting out there."
Georgia pitcher Sarah McCloud
On her performance:
"I'm really just proud of the way my teammates played today. Our defense was fantastic, and I just wanted to hit my spots. Really, I just tried to make my pitches and I knew that the defense would be behind me. I felt like I got a little better as the game went on. I was really able to get into a rhythm towards the end of the game."
