Junior Holly Yost shut out UCLA on five hits for her first complete game of the year to lead 19th-ranked California to a doubleheader sweep over the Bruins Saturday on Levine-Fricke Field.
Yost, who improved her record to 5-4, beat UCLA, 6-0, in the nightcap. In the first game, the Bears (30-19, 8-8) defeated the Bruins (13-20, 3-11), 8-1. In the opener, leadoff hitter Megumi Takasaki started Cal's half of the first inning by being hit by a pitch from UCLA starter Stephanie Swenson. After Amber Phillips walked, the two runners move up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Iancin and came around to score on a single to center by designated player Yost to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
Cal scored three times in the second inning to go up, 5-0, on two hits and a pair of UCLA errors. The Bears added two more runs in the fifth on a pinch hit, two-run double by Jenny Ackley, and they wrapped up their scoring in the sixth on an RBI single by Valerie Nicklas.
Whitney Floyd tossed a four-hitter for Cal, giving up one unearned run and striking out five to improve to 16-10 on the year.
In the second game, Cal struck for a single run in the first inning on a single by Takasaki, a sacrifice by Phillips and a single by Iancin. That lead held until the fifth inning when the Bears exploded for five runs after two were out. Yost and Paige Bowie knocked in one run apiece during the rally, while Ackley added another two-run hit.
Yost struck out seven on the day and did not allow a UCLA base hit until Lupe Brambila singled with one out in the fifth.
