Softball Sweeps No. 12 Arizona State

April 19, 1998

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to escape with a 4-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader as the 21st-ranked Golden Bears swept a pair from No. 12 Arizona State Sunday on Strawberry Field. In the opener, Cal (28-19, 6-8) defeated the Sun Devils (32-16, 4-10), 5-2.

In that first game, the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Phillips, Katie May and Carlyn Rojas all doubled during the rally, while Paige Bowie added an RBI single. Cal extended its advantage to 5-0 in the third when Bowie hit a two-run homer over the right field fence.

ASU scored single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, but the Sun Devils left 10 runners on base during the game and were unable to get any closer. Whitney Floyd tossed the first six innings for Cal to pick up the win, and Nicole DiSalvio retired the side in the seventh for her third save. In the second game, ASU scored twice in the top of the first on four singles. However, the Bears tallied their first run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by May. Cal tied the score in the second when Maiko Bristow singled home pinch runner Valerie Nicklas.

Both teams had chances to score over the next seven innings, but ASU had two runners thrown out at the plate and Cal hit into three double plays. With the international tie-breaker rule in effect starting in the 10th inning (when a runner is placed on second base), ASU broke through with a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Erin Hull.

In Cals half of the inning, Phillips reached on an error by pitcher Carrie Breedlove as Bristow went from second to third. Bristow then scored on a wild pitch and Phillips raced all the way to third on the play. After Lisa Iancin walked, May hit a two-hopper to second base, but Holly Smith bobbled the grounder and Phillips scored on the play.
