MORAGA, Calif. - Strong winds and threat of rain could not stop the No. 1 California softball team from scoring a run in six of the seven innings to overpower Saint Mary's 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to moving to 37-1 on the season, the Golden Bears improve their all-time record with the Gaels to 48-0.

Cal jumped on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. The Bears tacked on two in the third, and one in innings four through six before a final two in the top of the seventh. Cal outhit Saint Mary's 9-6.

Breana Kostreba led the Bears with three RBI courtesy a homer and a base hit. Valerie Arioto also went yard, adding a solo shot to her RBI groundout. Jamia Reid and Danielle Henderson paced the Bears with two runs. In total, 17 Bears saw action in Moraga.

Valerie Arioto started and earned the win, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out six. Jolene Henderson threw the final three innings, also allowing three hits.

Saint Mary's Lemmon started and lasted 2.0 innings before she was yanked, but not before she allowed four earned runs on four hits and four walks. Lira pitched 4.0 innings (three hits, two earned runs, two walks) and Green closed out the final inning with two hits and two unearned runs.

 

 

Top of the First - Cal 2, SMC 0:

Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk both singled and came home on a Valerie Arioto groundout to second and a Breana Kostreba hit to right, respectively.

Top of the Third - Cal 4, SMC 0:

After Jace Williams patiently waited out a walk, Breana Kostreba drove her in with a homer to right-center field.

Top of the Fourth - Cal 5, SMC 0:

Jamia Reid walked then stole second and third to put her into prime scoring position when Britt Vonk grounded out to second.

Top of the Fifth - Cal 6, SMC 0:

Victoria Jones doubled to the wall in left-center field, scoring Danielle Henderson from first.

Top of the Sixth - Cal 7, SMC 0:

Valerie Arioto hit the ball approximately 225 feet out with a solo shot to center.

Top of the Seventh - Cal 9, SMC 0:

Elia Reid brought home Danielle Henderson when she reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Reid scored from third off a base hit by LaRisa Jones.

The rival Wildcats of Arizona come to town, beginning the three-game series Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m. Things continue with a special alumni day on April 14 at 1 p.m. The series closes April 15 at noon at Levine-Fricke Field.
