BERKELEY, Calif.--Cal Poly SLO scored three runs in the top of the 14th inning to break a 4-4 tie
and post a 7-4 win, completing a doubleheader sweep of 19th-ranked California
Wednesday on Strawberry Field.
In the opener, Cal Poly (15-11-1) blanked Cal (20-13), 2-0.
In the first game, Cal Poly pitcher Desarie Knipfer tossed a four-hitter and
struck out 11 to pick up the victory. The Mustangs scored both of their runs in
the top of the third inning on RBI singles by Anna Bauer and Kelly Smith.
Whitney Floyd, who pitched the first three innings, took the loss for Cal,
falling to 10-7 on the year.
In the night cap, Cal scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings
to forge a 3-1 lead. Third baseman Carlyn Rojas had an RBI double in the fourth,
while Holly Yost knocked in the run in the fifth with a single and outfielder
Maiko Bristow doubled in Paige Bowie in the sixth.
However, with the score at 3-1, Cal Poly rallied with two runs in the top of the
seventh on a two-out two-run triple by center fielder Kelly Sack.
Cal Poly moved ahead, 4-3, in the ninth inning on an RBI double by Sack. But Cal
tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a triple by catcher Megumi Takasaki
and a single by second baseman Lisa Iancin.
The Mustangs, though, got to a tired Holly Yost in the 14th. Yost, who pitched
the final seven innings in relief of starter Nicole DiSalvio, gave up three
walks and two hits in the 14th. Sara Stockton brought home the first run on a
double, while Bauer followed with an RBI single and the final run scored on a
wild pitch.
Knipfer tossed the last six innings, striking out six, for the win to improve to
11-4.
