HONOLULU - Just one day short of the anniversary of then-No. 19 Hawaii handing then-No.2 California its first loss of the 2012 season, the Golden Bears denied the Rainbow Wahine a repeat victory by dispatching a 1-0 loss to their Hawaiian hosts Thursday at the Chevron Spring Fling in Honolulu. No. 5/4 Cal upped its season record to 22-2, while No. 20/23 Hawaii drops to 19-6 overall.
The storyline coming in to the game focused on two of the nation's elite pitchers - senior Jolene Henderson and Hawaii senior Kaia Parnaby. Both held a 17-2 record at the start of the game, but it was Henderson who ultimately pitched her way to a win by whiffing nine batters and allowing one walk and two hits.
Even with Parnaby at the helm for the Rainbow Wahine, the Golden Bears were able to produce offensively, adding up nine hits and one run via an RBI double by freshman Vanessa Alvarez to score sophomore Danielle Henderson. D. Henderson, Alvarez and freshman Khala Taylor all went 2-for-3 for the evening. Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes, junior Ashley Decker and J. Henderson also got their bats on the ball.
The lone run came at the top of the second inning. D. Henderson started the Bears with a leadoff single, advancing to third on a perfectly placed bunt by older sister J. Henderson. Though J. Henderson was caught stealing on first, D. Henderson was patient and her efforts were rewarded when Alvarez doubled down the left field line to reach the final dish.
The Bears were wary as the game continued, as in last year's tournament against Hawaii, the game went scoreless through nine innings until Hawaii's Jessica Iwata hit a walk-off 2 RBI home run in the tenth to hand Cal its first loss of the season. The Bears once again found themselves in the final inning with Iwata at the plate, but as in the previous innings, J. Henderson dominated to secure the win.
California will play a game vs. Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m. PT before bracket play is announced for the final day of the Spring Fling on Saturday.
