March 11, 1998
BERKELEY, Calif.- Shortstop Katie May hit a sharp single to left field, bringing home Lisa Iancin from third base with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning, to lead 22nd-ranked Cal to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday on Strawberry Field.
In the first game, Wisconsin (7-11) defeated Cal (9-9), 7-5.
In the opener, the Badgers capitalized on four errors and four walks from the Bears. The Cal miscues led to seven unearned runs. The Bears did take a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by catcher Megumi Takasaki. But Wisconsin tallied five runs with two out in the top of the sixth to take control with a 7-3 lead.
Cal rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI hits by Takasaki and Iancin to close the gap to 7-5. However, Badger pitcher Ashley Fauser struck out Holly Yost and Carlyn Rojas to end the threat.
In the second game, Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run to left field by leadoff hitter Carin Bouchard. Cal, though, scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score on an RBI single by Rojas and taking the lead on May's base hit.
Yost came on in relief in the sixth inning and retired five of the six batters she faced to pick up her first win of the year.
