Softball Swept by Stanford

BERKELEY, Calif. - >Marcy Crouch tossed a two-hitter and struck out four as Stanford beat Cal, 4-0, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Strawberry Field, leading the 17th-ranked Cardinal to a sweep of the 13th-rated Golden Bears. In the opener, Stanford (15-4, 2-0) defeated Cal (8-8, 0-2), 4-2.

In the first game, Stanford jumped out on top in the first inning with two runs. Right fielder Michele Acosta's two-out single scored second baseman Jennie Foyle for the first run, and the Cardinal added a second run on a throwing error by Cal shortstop Katie May.

An RBI single by designated player Jenny Ackley gave the Bears their first run in the third inning, but the Cardinal added single score in the fifth inning on a base hit by shortstop Michelle Schneider.

Cal closed the gap to 3-2 on an RBI single by first baseman Maiko Bristow in the bottom of the inning. However, Stanford tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a pinch hit single from Lauren Gellman. Becky Blevins scattered nine hits to improve to 9-1 on the season, while Cal's Whitney Floyd dropped to 4-4.

In the second game, Stanford benefited from three outfield errors and a passed ball by Cal, scoring a trio of unearned runs. Crouch, in addition to upping her record to 4-3, had two hits and an RBI in the contest.
