FRESNO, Calif. - It was an all-around effort for Jolene Henderson against Fresno State, as the senior ace fanned a season-high 11 batters and hit a solo shot to score the game's only run. The No. 6 Golden Bears defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 on their home turf Saturday at Bulldog Diamond.
The pitchers went head-to-head for the full seven, combining for 21 strikeouts, three walks and just three hits. Fresno State freshman Jill Compton struck out 10 batters and walked two, and Henderson struck out 11 with one walk and two hits. Each team left four runners on base.
Henderson's homer was Cal's lone hit of the night, and it could not have come at a better time. Both teams entered the seventh inning scoreless, and Fresno State had registered the only two hits of the game. Henderson stepped up to the plate as the leadoff batter at the top of the seventh and zipped one over the fence to help the Golden Bears to their second one-run win of the day.
Cal will finish up its weekend at the Fresno State Classic with an 11:30 a.m. game against East Bay rival Saint Mary's. A win against the Gaels would be the Bears' 20th victory.
