FRESNO, Calif. - With an incredible eight runs in the top of the second and four more in the fifth, the No. 1/2 California softball team earned an 12-0 mercy win over San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at Fresno State's Bayer CropScience Classic. While Jace Williams paced the Bears with two RBI, nine other Bears also knocked in runs - Jamia Reid, Taylor Vincent, Valerie Arioto, Mary Lee, Breana Kostreba, Elia Reid, Jolene Henderson, Frani Echavarria and Lindsey Ziegenhirt. Rebecca Arbino started for the Aztecs and gave up six earned runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Bailey Micetich pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
Jolene Henderson pitched the five-inning victory, striking out six and allowing just three hits. Top of the Second - Cal 8, SDSU 0: The Bears loaded the bases right off the bat in the top of the second with Jace Williams singling past short, Breana Kostreba knocking one up the middle and Cheyenne Cordes taking a shot to the leg, allowing Williams to score when Danielle Henderson singled up the middle. Jolene Henderson singled to short, where it was handled cleaning but the throw home to get Kostreba was not in time. Frani Echavarria walked in a run, then Jamia Reid reached when the ball went through the first baseman's legs, bringing home Cordes. Valerie Arioto waited out an RBI walk and Williams scored two more with a single to center. The RBI parade was not complete for Kostreba drove in Arioto with a single to center. Top of the Fifth - Cal 12, SDSU 0: Lindsey Ziegenhirt batted in Ashley Decker with a single to right and Taylor Vincent plated Frani Echavarria with a single to left. With the bases loaded and two hours, Mary Lee took a shot to the ankle to bring in a run and then Elia Reid's hit to short was bobbled, allowing Vincent to score.
