FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 6 California Golden Bears earned a close 1-0 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs in a game that came down to the final inning Saturday at the Fresno State Classic.
The Bears went three full innings before registering their first hit with a single by sophomore Danielle Henderson. Cal added another hit to the board with a single to left field by J. Henderson but the Bears could not get a run across before the inning ended with three outs.
The pressure was on entering the seventh inning, with neither team scoring any runs prior. Senior Henderson hit a leadoff single to get things going, then senior Lindsey Ziegenhirt popped up to second base for Cal's first out. Junior Victoria Jones followed with a single to center field, and then freshman Jasmin Mejia reached base on a fielder's choice while Jones was put out at second and J. Henderson advanced to third.
With runners on the corners and two outs, the pressure was on freshman Khala Taylor. The rookie waited for the right pitch and finally an RBI single gave the Bears a run for the first time in the game - a lead they protected through to bottom of the seventh to close out the game with a win.
J. Henderson (13-2) offered up just one hit and no walks while fanning five batters. San Diego State pitcher Rebecca Arbino (7-6) pitched the full seven for the Aztecs, walking one and giving up seven hits while striking out three.
California returns to Bulldog Diamond at 8:15 p.m. for a game against the hosting Fresno State Bulldogs.
