Score: No. 1 Cal 5, Northwestern 1
BERKELEY - The No. 1/2 California softball team struck early against Northwestern - scoring four runs in the bottom of the first - to earn a 5-1 victory over the Wildcats. The Saturday afternoon game at Cal State Fullerton's DeMarini Invitational closes the Golden Bears' Orange County weekend with an unsullied 16-0 overall record.
"I thought we looked great all weekend," senior Jace Williamssaid. "Everyone contributed and I thought our pitching performances were phenomenal."
The Bears tacked on an insurance run in the third and Northwestern avoided the shutout by scoring once in the top of the fifth. Cal outhit the Wildcats 11-6.
"I've been really focusing on watching the ball leave the hand and relaxing," Henderson said.
Both Henderson and Jace Williamshad doubles. For Williams, it was the fifth consecutive game in which she notched an RBI.
"It's impossible to get an RBI without your table setters getting on base so kudos to them," Williams said when asked about her RBI. "Teams continue to walk Val so I need to be more consistent and make them regret that. I did better this weekend, but I need to pick I up and force them to pitch to her more consistently."
Henderson threw the complete-game victory, fanning seven and allowing one earned run and six hits.
"Knowing everyone on the team has my back takes away the pressure," Henderson said. "It was a good team performance this weekend."
Meghan Lambert started for the 'Cats and lasted one inning (five hits, four earned runs, one strikeout) before Sammy Albanese entered, pitching the next five (one earned run, six hits, three walks, one strikeout).

With a double to left, Williams drove in Jamia Reid, who had singled to the circle. Cheyenne Cordes punched a hit to right, plating Britt Vonk, who had singled to second. Jolene Hendersonsent the ball flying intot he left-field corner for a two RBI double, scoring Cordes and Williams.
Bottom of the Third - Northwestern 0, Cal 5:
Cordes singled to left and Arioto, who had reached on a four-pitch walk, scored.
Top of the Fifth - Northwestern 1, Cal 5:
Anna Edwards singled up the middle and scored from third when Emily Allard singled to second.

After hosting UC Davis on Wednesday, March 7 at Levine-Fricke Field, Cal hits the road for a bus trip to Fresno, Calif., for the Bayer CropScience Classic. Cal will play Butler and San Diego State on Saturday, March 10, while Sunday, March 11 will see the Bears take on Fresno State and Purdue.
