CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - For the first time since opening weekend, the opposition scored first, but it did not matter much to the No. 1/3 California softball team for the Golden Bears came away with the win - a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon. Cal got run production from Britt Vonk, Valerie Arioto and Breana Kostreba. In addition to her game-high two RBI thanks to a homer, Arioto also pitched a four-hitter, allowing just one earned run and striking out five. Top of the First - Cal Poly 1, California 0: Sobczak singled through the left side and scored when Westlund tripled to center. Bottom of the First - Cal Poly 1, California 2: Britt Vonk led off and laid down a perfect bunt single, and came home when Valerie Arioto went deep to right for her seventh homer of the year. Bottom of the Fifth - Cal Poly 1, California 3: Cordes singled to right field, moved to second on an Arioto walk and to third on a Williams fielder's choice. Kostreba netted her second RBI of the day with a single through the right side, scoring Cordes from third. Bottom of the Sixth - Cal Poly 1, California 4: Ashley Decker singled up the middle, stole second and speeded on home thanks to Britt Vonk, who singled down the right-field line.
