CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - It only took two runs for the No. 1/3 California softball team to defeat New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Aggies 2-0.
The Golden Bears improve to 10-0 while NMSU suffers only its third loss of the season, dropping to 10-4.
Jolene Henderson did a seven-inning stint in the circle to move to 6-0 overall, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits.
Alex Newman started the game for the Aggies, pitching 1.2 innings (3 hits, one run) before Karysta Donistrhorpe entered to pitch in the second. Donisthorpe lasted 1.1 innings (one earned run on two hits and one walk) until Celisha Walker came in for the bottom of the fourth. Walker pitched two complete, giving up just one hit and one walk.
Bottom of the First - NMSU 0, California 1:
Vonk singled to short, beating the throw to first, to begin the inning and moved to second thanks to a Valerie Arioto walk. The NMSU catcher inferred on the first pitch of Jace Williams' at-bat, loading the bases for Breana Kostreba, who had a long sacrifice fly to left, plating Vonk.
Bottom of the Third - NMSU 0, California 2:
Donisthorpe hit the first batter of the inning in Arioto, and she moved to second when Jace Williams singled up the middle. After picking up William's hit, the centerfielder dropped the ball to allow Arioto to move to second but Williams was out on the 9-5-4 throw to second. With LaRisa Jones pinch running for Arioto at third, Cheyenne Cordes singled right down the left-field line, plating Cal's second run of the game.
