Ninemire Wins 400th as No. 24 California Sweeps New Mexico State
BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Holly Yost tossed a pair of complete game shutouts and head coach Diane Ninemire won her 400th career game at Cal as the 24th-ranked Golden Bears swept New Mexico State, 2-0 and 2-0, Sunday on Strawberry Field. With the wins, Cal improves to 29-21, while New Mexico State falls to 28-21.
In the opener, the Bears broke on top with a two-out rally in the second inning. Freshman second baseman Lisa Iancin singled, stole second and came home on a double by sophomore shortstop Katie May. Cal later added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Iancin led off with a walk and went to third on another double by May. Iancin then scored on a single by sophomore catcher Megumi Takasaki. Yost allowed six hits and struck out five for the victory. In the second game, the teams were scoreless through five innings before Cal broke through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior right fielder Kirsten Drake singled and went to second on a walk to senior first baseman Melanie McCart. Drake came around to score on a single by Yost. One batter later, pinch runner Meredith Mollner scored on a throwing error by New Mexico State shortstop Latasia Larez. Yost again tossed a six-hitter and stuck out six to up her record to 22-16.
Ninemire, who is in her 10th season with the Bears, picked up her 400th career win in the first game. She now has a mark of 401-220, leading Cal to nine NCAA Tournaments and two berths in the College World Series. After a doubleheader at Stanford Wednesday, Cal closes out its home schedule with a twinbill against Washington at 1 p.m. May 4. Former Cal All-American and 1996 Olympian Michele Granger will throw out the first pitch in the Husky contest.
