No. 8 California Sweeps Pair from Santa Clara in Softball Opener
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior Jenny Ackley doubled home Holly Yost from second base in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead eighth-ranked Cal to a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara Saturday at Strawberry Field.
In the opener, the Bears (2-0) blanked the Broncos (0-2), 7-0, on a three-hitter by junior left-hander Whitney Floyd.
Cal scored quickly in Game 1, pushing across three runs in the first inning. After third baseman Jessica Parker walked and first baseman Melanie McCart singled, Ackley drove in both runners with a double. Freshman second baseman Lisa Iancin followed with a single, scoring Ackley.
The Bears tallied three more runs in the third inning, when catcher Megumi Takasaki tripled and right fielder Kirsten Drake and Parker rapped back-to-back doubles. Parker eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by Ackley.
Cal scored its final run in the fourth inning. After Karen Bonini reached on an error, she scored on a single by freshman pinch hitter Meredith Mollner. Floyd, a two-time All-American, scattered three singles and struck out five for the win.
In the nightcap, Cal jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Iancin doubled and Ackley singled her in. Santa Clara tied the score in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Catcher Karen Ahrens reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Shawnterra Moore to second, and she scored on a fielder's choice with two outs to tie the game.
In the eighth inning, Yost walked, went to second base on a single by McCart and scored the game-winner when Ackley doubled down the left field line. On the mound, Yost threw a one-hitter, allowing just an infield single in the fourth inning. She struck out seven and walk one.
Cal next hosts San Jose State Sunday (Feb. 2) at 1 p.m.
