BERKELEY - The California women's soccer team is gearing up for a 10-day international tour of Costa Rica in May 2013. The Golden Bears will be based in San Jose, Costa Rica, and the team will travel to various parts of the country to train and play matches. The Bears will play the Costa Rican National Team and other teams during their tour.
"This is an amazing opportunity for our ladies to experience an entirely different culture, while growing closer together as a team," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "The chance to play such formidable competition will be good for us, but more importantly, our goal is to immerse ourselves in the Cost Rican culture and service the local communities."
This trip to Costa Rica is a once in a lifetime experience for the players that will have a huge impact on their chemistry in the upcoming fall season. The players will be ensconced in a new environment and get the chance to take in as many sites and experiences as possible. Per NCAA rule, Division I programs can only do these trips once every four years, and the players know that they are fortunate to be at a university that enables this.
There are three different fundraising options fans can use to help support the Cal women's soccer team, and all of the proceeds go towards the Costa Rica trip. Donations can be made in the following ways:
By mail: Please make checks payable to the UC Regents and mail to Cal Athletics Development, ATTN: Brian Raney, 195 Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, CA 94720
Family and friends can wish a player "bon voyage" by making a donation in the player's honor. Indicate on your check, or when calling in, the full name of the player you would like to honor. If you are donating online, please select the "in honor of" option and fill in your player's full name. NOTE: In order to streamline donation processing, "in honor of" must be noted at the TIME OF GIFT.
As a gesture of appreciation, donations of $99 or more to this initiative will be stewarded with a 2013 season pass for Cal women's soccer home games (upon request) as well as a Cal women's soccer t-shirt. Donations of $25 or more will be stewarded with a Cal women's soccer t-shirt.
Donors at the levels above will be contacted by Cal assistant coach Cori Alexander for t-shirt size preference (Adult M/L/XL).
The Golden Bears previously embarked on a 10-day tour of Italy in May 2009. The experiences on that trip were documented by former Cal star Tracy Hamm, who shared the adventures of the team as it travelled through Italy by writing a blog on CalBears.com.
The women's soccer team finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 16-6 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
