Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 18 Massachusetts
Dallas-Senior Courtney Carroll and sophomore Sarah Kaminsky netted a goal apiece on Sunday against 18th-ranked Massachusetts to help the California women's soccer team notch a 2-1 victory over the Minutewomen in a neutral site match played at Southern Methodist University. The win improved the Golden Bears to 4-4-1 on the season while UMass fell to 6-2.
Cal opened the scoring just one minute into the match when Carroll sent a bending shot into the upper left corner of the goal for her second score of the year.
Kaminsky found the net for the first time this season and pushed the Bears lead to 2-0 28 minutes later when she shot in a loose ball from the right side of the goal.
UMass would finally get on the board in the game's 34th-minute but it wouldn't be enough as neither squad was able to capitalize on second half scoring opportunities.
The Bears outshot their opponent (20-14) for the seventh time this season, and had a 7-5 corner kick advantage. Cal's freshman goalkeeper, Maite Zabala, making only her second collegiate start, collected two saves on the afternoon.
Cal women's soccer returns to action Friday, Oct. 3, when the Bears travel to Cal Poly SLO to face the Mustangs.
