Cal Women's Soccer Edged by No. 1 North Carolina, 1-0
HOUSTON - North Carolina sophomore Lorrie Fair netted the games only goal 37 minutes into the match and the top-ranked Tar Heals held off the upset minded California Golden Bears, 1-0, Friday afternoon. The loss, Cals second consecutive one goal defeat to a top four club, dropped the Bears overall record to 3-4-1 on the season.
North Carolina, which had been averaging nearly five goals a game, was held to a single goal for only the second time this season as Cal goalkeeper, Maite Zabala, kept the defending national champions at bay most of the afternoon. Zabala, a freshman from Boise, Idaho, who was making her first collegiate start in goal, made 11 saves and faced 26 shots in the match.
The Bears will try get back on the winning track Sunday, Sept. 28, when the Bears face 18th-ranked Massachusetts in Dallas.
