Bears Shutout Gaels, 1-0, Win Second Straight
Berkeley, Calif. -- Cal goalkeepers Jill Stephenson and Maite Zabala combined to hold Saint Mary's scoreless and the California women's soccer team improved its record to 3-2-1, defeating the Gaels, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. The victory was the Bears second straight shutout as Cal upped its home record to 2-0 on the season.
Cal's Kim Brown scored the only goal of the match on an assist from Gretchen Vanderlip in the game's 74th-minute. Brown, a sophomore from Berkeley, one-timed the Vanderlip pass from the right edge of the goal box, sneaking the ball between Saint Mary's goalkeeper Amber King and the right post, for the game-winner.
For the match, the Bears out shot the Gaels, 14-6.
The loss dropped Saint Mary's to 2-3 on the season.
The Bears return to action Sunday, Sept. 21, as they take on nationally ranked Santa Clara at Witter Field on the Cal campus. The match, which is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., will be also be televised by SportsChannel on tape-delay at 4:00 p.m.
