Cal Defeats UC Santa Barbara in Home Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California women's soccer team improved its record to 2-2-1, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, Friday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. It was the Bears first home match of the season after playing four straight away from Witter Field.

Cal's Natalie Stuhlmueller scored the game's lone goal on an assist from Tami Pivnick at the 78-minute mark of the match. Stuhlmueller was hit in stride by Pivnick's pass and was able to get behind the Gaucho defense, beating UCSB goalkeeper Ilsa Bertolini from 12 yards out for her second goal of the season.

Bertolini came up with 16 saves on the afternoon and was under pressure the entire match as Cal out shot UCSB, 30-7.

The loss dropped UCSB to 1-4 on the season

The Bears return to action Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1:00 p.m. as the take on Bay Area rival Saint Mary's College at Witter Field on the Cal campus.
