Cal Opens Season with 5-2 Win over Utah in Women's Soccer
Livermore, Calif. -- Five different Golden Bears netted goals and the
University of California women's soccer team defeated the University of Utah,
5-2, in Saturday's second game of the Adidas/Lady Foot Locker Classic played at
Robertson Park in Livermore, Calif.
Courtney Carroll, Stacey Mallison, Ashlee Hunt, Kim Brown and Natalie
Stuhlmueller each recorded one goal a piece and Utah sophomore Staci Burt
tallied a pair for the Utes to provide the final result.
Burt got the Utes out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring her first goal only eight
minutes into the contest. The Bears responded quickly, however, as Carroll and
Mallison each registered a goal to put Cal up by a 2-1 margin at the half.
Hunt, opened the second half scoring with a goal at the 51-minute mark to put
Cal up 3-1, and the Bears looked to be pulling away. But Burt's second goal,
in the 64th-minute, brought Utah with in one, and with plenty of time
remaining, the game's outcome was still in doubt.
Cal put the game on ice when Brown's header, off a cross from Stuhlmueller,
beat Utah goalkeeper Tawni Martineau with eight minutes remaining to put the
Bears up 4-2. Stuhlmueller added the Bears fifth and final goal of the evening
on an unassisted breakaway two minutes later to conclude the scoring.
Cal wraps up the Adidas/Lady Foot Locker Classic Sunday evening with a 7:00
p.m. match versus Northwestern (0-1).
