Bears Roll Past Oregon State, 4-1
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Four separate Golden Bears each netted a goal apiece as the California women's soccer team won its fourth straight match with a 4-1 victory over the Oregon State Beavers Sunday afternoon. The win improved Cal to 9-7-1 (4-3, Pac-10) on the season while Oregon State fell to 2-14-1 (8-8 Pac-10).
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, but just five minutes it the second stanza, Lindy Brown of Oregon State gave the Beavers what would turn out to be their only lead of the game (1-0) with an unassisted goal.
The OSU goal finally roused the Bears to life as Cal outshot Oregon State, 11-3, in the second half. It didn't take Cal long to get the equalizer as Stacey Mallison found the net in the game's 54th minute on an assist from Gretchen Vanderlip for the Bears first goal. The Bears went up for good at the 72 minute mark when Courtney Carroll scored her fifth goal of the year, unassisted, to give Cal a 2-1 lead.
Stacey Shearer continued Cal's second half barrage on the Oregon State goal when she netted her first goal of the year on an assist from Mallison in the 80th minute. Just five minutes later, Vanderlip had the Bears on the board once again off an assist from Ashlee Hunt scoring Cal's fourth and final goal of the match.
The four goals was the most by the Cal team since the opening game of the season when the Bears netted five in a 5-2 victory over Utah.
The Bears will close out the 1997 season this week when they play at Arizona, Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. and then at Arizona State on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 12 noon.
