Bears Shutout Cougars

BERKELEY, Calif. -- California sophomore goalkeepers Jill Stephenson notched her second consecutive shutout and freshman Natal Stuhlmueller scored her third goal of the year as the Cal Golden Bears defeated Pac-10 rival Washington State, 1-0, in their final home match of the season Sunday afternoon. The victory evened Cal's record at 7-7-1 (2-3, Pac-10) while Washington State fell to 7-8 (2-4 Pac-10).

Cal had things going its way in the first half, peppering Washington State goalkeeper Shannon Wilson with 14 shots. However, the Bears couldn't seem to find the net, despite coming close on several occasions.

The Bears finally got on the board with their 17th shot of the match just three minutes into the second half when Stuhlmueller took a cross from senior Courtney Carroll and one-timed the pass into the upper left corner of the goal for the game-winner.

Cal also registered its most shots (27) since the Bears had 30 versus UC Santa Barbara in a 1-0 victory on Sept. 12, 1997. The Bear defense limited WSU to nine shots on the afternoon

The Bears return to action Friday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to take on the Oregon Ducks at 2:00 p.m. Cal will complete the weekend road trip versus Oregon State in Corvallis, Sunday, Nov. 2, at 12:00 noon.
