Score: No. 12 Cal 2, UW 1
BERKELEY - The No. 12 California women's soccer scored first and last to notch a key 2-1 victory over Washington on a cloudy Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Senior and 2012 New Zealand Olympian Betsy Hassett tallied both of the Golden Bears goals.
"We're very pleased with the performance," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Washington is a very talented team. They play a style that's very difficult for us to play against because they possess the ball so well. I thought our Bears did a nice job of trying to thwart their attack. I felt that even though it was somewhat of an even game that we were able to take our opportunities well, and as a result, got the win."
Hassett first struck in the 32nd minute only to have UW's Jaclyn Softli equalize just two minutes later. The teams headed into halftime knotted 1-1.
"We felt that we needed to have energy coming into the second half," McGuire said. "Coming out of halftime, Washington changed its shape from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3, which surprised us. That caused us some problems, but I felt like our players adjusted well."
Hassett scored in the 52nd minute to put the Bears ahead for good. In the second half, Cal outshot the Huskies 8-5 after posting a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half.
"When we scored our first goal, we had good energy. When Washington scored its goal - particularly because of the manner they scored it - that did take the wind out of our sails. But, this is an experienced team now. At halftime, we said there's no panic. We're going to go out there and play the wonderful game of soccer and get the win. I think our players had confidence. But again, Washington is probably one of the best teams we've faced this season, and that was a really tough match to get through."
Thanks to the win, Cal continues its epic roll. The Bears have now won their past seven games and their most recent six Pac-12 games. Additionally, the Bears have scored at least one goal in each of their last 13 matches. Cal has tallied more than one goal in the past seven games, scoring three goals in three of the past five games.

33:44 - Cal 1, UW 1:
Jaclyn Softli, with no Huskies near her in the goal mouth, took one shot, which Kruger saved. But Softli was there to collect the rebound and shoot it to the near side for her third goal of the year.
51:56 - Cal 2, UW 1:
Head referee Adam Brugman issued a yellow card to Washington's Annie Sittauer, awarding Cal a free kick. The ball was crossed into the box, where Emi Lawson looked to head it in but a Husky defensive header negated that attempt. Hassett went cross goal with a shot to the right corner for her sixth goal of the year.
