LOS ANGELES - No. 10 California battled No. 19 USC to a 0-0 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field. The Golden Bears are now 7-2-3 (0-1-1 Pac-10) after recording their eighth shutout of 2006, while USC is also 7-2-3 but 0-0-2 in the conference.

Cal freshman Gina Pellegrini received her first start in goal today for the Bears and responded with five saves. Pellegrini, who hails from Santa Rosa, had previously seen about 15 minutes of action in the Bears' 3-1 win over Air Force Sept. 7. Senior defender Alivia Mazura and senior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami also made goal line saves for Cal.

USC outshot Cal, 16-9, but Cal held a player advantage over the final 30-plus minutes of the game. The Women of Troy's Nina Loucks was sent off the field with a red card in the 80th minute. The Bears held a 3-1 shot advantage in the first 10-minute overtime period, and the Women of Troy launched the only two shots in the final overtime.

Junior forward Stephanie Wieger led Cal with four shots in her second start of the season. Senior forward Julia Schnugg, junior midfielder Carolina Lea and freshman forward Katie Oakes posted the Bears' three shots on goal.

Cal returns home to host Arizona Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Six of the Bears' final eight regular-season contests take place in Berkeley.
