AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 16 California women's soccer team lost in the final seconds, 2-1, to No. 7 Texas on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears held a 1-0 lead for much of the game before the Longhorns tallied two goals in the second half to push UT ahead for good. The Bears drop to 5-3-0 overall while the Longhorns improve to 7-0-1.
"Credit goes to Texas and Coach Petrucelli for winning a very close game," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Their winning goal came from a set piece where the player who scored appeared to be four yards offsides. Our players worked so hard, they did not deserve that ending."
Cal struck first with a goal from sophomore forward Alex Morgan with 15:23 to play in the first half with Megan Jesolva coming in with the assist. The Bears remained in the lead until the 73rd minute when UT's Courtney Goodson headed in a corner kick to knot the score at 1-1. The teams appeared headed into overtime until Kasey Moore scored at 89:21.
Morgan paced California with three shots on goal. Her goal was her fifth of the 2008 season. The Bears out shot the Longhorns, 5-4 and forced the UT keeper to make four saves. Between the posts for Cal, junior goalie Gina Pellegrini had two stops, both of which came in the second half.
The Bears return home to host Brigham Young on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Santa Clara on Sunday at 1 p.m.
