BERKELEY - The No. 21 California women's soccer team defeated visiting Missouri, 3-0, on Saturday morning at Edwards Stadium. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 3-1 overall and avenged last season's 4-0 loss to Missouri while the Tigers drop to 1-2.
"Missouri beat us badly last year and the team needed the win for their confidence. As we move forward, it proves that we can compete with very good teams because Missouri is a first-class organization - they're well coached and very, very good and are a very difficult team," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Today, everyone rolled up their sleeves and worked hard together."
The Bears scored first with a shot from eight yards from sophomore forward Lisa Kevorkian thanks to an assist from senior forward Valerie Barnes.
Senior midfielder/forward Nikki Schrey solidified the Bears' lead with a goal off a deflected shot with the assist from junior defender/forward Katherine Daiss with eight minutes to go in the first half.
With minutes to play in the game, sophomore forward Alex Morgan came in and put the Bears ahead for good. With assists coming from freshman forward Camellia Senemar and Schrey, Morgan went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and scored her fourth goal of the season.
The Bears out-shot the Tigers 13-10 while both teams had six shots on goal. Morgan paced Cal with five shots with a team-high three on goal. Cal keep junior Gina Pellegrini grabbed six saves between the posts and Missouri's Tasha Dittamore had two.
Cal will take on Cal State Northridge on Fri., Sept. 12 in the Saint Mary's Fall Classic in Moraga, Calif.
