BERKELEY - Powered by a flurry of three goals from Grace Leer, the California women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit to beat San Jose State 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the win, the Golden Bears open the 2012 with a spotless 2-0 record with five different Bears scoring in their first weekend of play.
The Spartans looked to spoil the Bears' home opener with a goal in the ninth minute. Leer struck two minutes after subbing into the game with her first goal at 21:54. SJSU capitalized on a free kick with a goal, taking back the one-goal lead in the 32nd minute. In the waning three minutes of the first half, Cal scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break. Ifeoma Onumonu scored the first goal of her Cal career in the 55th minute of the second half for the Bears' final score.
After the Bears jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first half of Friday's season-opener at Pacific, the 1-0 deficit was the first time Cal had been down in the young 2012 season. The Bears are now 5-0 in the all-time series with San Jose State.
Cal outshot the Spartans 19-5.
Emily Kruger earned her second win of the year, playing the full 90 and making one save. Splitting time in goal, Emily Pryor made two saves but allowed four goals, taking the loss, while Zoe Makrigiannis played the second 45 and made three stops and allowed on goal.

After the Spartans fired off a shot on the cross in from a corner kick, Cheryl Kute collected the rebound amidst a scrum in front of the near post. From there, Kute poked it through to the left back lower 90.
21:54 - Cal 1, SJSU 1:
With fresh legs - subbing in just two minutes prior - Grace Leer scored her first goal of the year. Fitzpatrick crossed the ball in from the far side, Leer collected the loose ball in the six-yard box and fired it in.
31:10 - SJSU 2, Cal 1:
Nina Pederson was called for a hand ball, award a free kick to the Spartans. Megan Molina took the kick from roughly five from the center line, and it found the right lower 90 to push SJSU up by one.
41:30 - Cal 2, SJSU 2:
Awarded a free kick, Thelma Einarsdottir stepped up to take it. In a shot of beauty, the Iceland native craftily bent the ball around the wall of Spartan defenders.
41:58 - Cal 3, SJSU 2:
Flanked by multiple SJSU bodies and the SJSU keeper, Leer found foot and waited for the perfect moment, when she flicked the ball in.
44:55 - Cal 4, SJSU 2:
With 10-second countdown well underway and audible, Leer fired off a shot from six yards out, sending the Bears into the half with a two-goal lead.
54:49 - Cal 5, SJSU 2:
Pressing for the first 10 minutes of the second half, a play started to transpire on the far side. Rachel Mercik crossed the ball in, finding Kory Lamet, who passed it to Ifeoma Onumonu in front of the goal, and Onumonu scored.
