PUEBLA, Mexico - California women's soccer sophomore Alex Morgan posted another assist today as the USA Women's U20 team took a 3-0 win against host Mexico in its third match of the 2008 CONCACAF Under-20 World Cup Qualifying Tournament at Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla, Mexico. The win puts the U.S. in sole possession of the top spot in Group A as it moves on to face Costa Rica (2nd place, Group B) in the semifinals on Wednesday, June 25 in an 11 a.m. PT kick-off. The U.S. defense has yet to give up a goal in this year's tournament, outscoring opponents by 16 goals so far.
Canada won the top spot in Group B and will take on Mexico in the other semifinal match. The winners of each semifinal, along with the winner of the third-place game will earn one of the region's three berths to the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup in Chile and a trip to the tournament final on Saturday, June 28.
Three different players scored goals for the United States, with Kelley O'Hara opening the scoring in the 10th minute of the first half; and Michelle Enyeart and Nikki Washington adding second half goals. On Washington's goal, Morgan ran after a long ball and beat the lone remaining defender. Her touch pass across the middle gave a streaking Washington an unchallenged attempt on goal in the 87th minute of play. Her shot beat Erika Venegas to give the U.S. a three-goal advantage.
Eleven nations have already qualified for the U-20 World Cup: host Chile; Japan, China and North Korea from Asia; France, Germany, Norway and England from Europe; New Zealand from Oceania; and Brazil and Argentina from South America.
Morgan had a phenomenal freshman year for the Golden Bears, starting in 15 of the 17 games she appeared in. The 5-7 forward helped Cal to a 15-5-1 record and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament as she scored a team-high eight goals. She also put up two assists and led the team in total points with 18 in her first year on campus. Morgan was a Pac-10 Conference All-Freshman Team selection and earned honorable mention for all-conference honors.
